China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) declared on 12th, June that with the welding of the pipe-jacking tunnel at Suichuang county, Jiangxi province, the second artery of west-east natural gas transmission project has been completed, and planed to put the whole artery into operation at the end of June.
The second artery of west-east natural gas transmission project is the nation’s fist large pipeline project that introduces foreign natural gas resource. It has a artery with 8 branches, it is 8653 kilometers long, starts from Huoerguosi, Xinjiang province, it across 15provinces and special administrative regions, and ends at Hong Kong. Among them, the line from Huoerguosi to Guangzhou is the artery, it is 4865 kilometers long.
The second artery of west-east natural gas transmission project has a gross investment of 142.2 billion yuan (RMB), it is capable of transmitting 30 billion cubic meters gas annually, it has a stable gas supply for over 30 years, so it is of importance to ensure our country’s energy safety, to optimize energy consumption structure, to promote energy-saving and emission-reduction, to transfer the mode of economic development and to realize scientific and sustainable development. Meanwhile, the project construction promotes the developments of machinery, electronics, metallurgy and dozens of other related industries and over 300 billion yuan (RMB) has been directly invested.
The construction of west-east natural gas transmission project is divided into two parts---west and east, bounded by Zhongwei city, Ningxia province. The west-line from Huoerguosi to Zhongwei was started constructing on 22nd February, 2008, and completed on 31st December, 2009. After putting into operation, it greatly eases the short gas supply situation in Urumqi, Beijing, Shanghai etc. The construction of the east line was started on 7th February, 2009. On 5th December, 2010, the north part of the line from Zhongwei, Ningxia province to Huangpi,

Hubei province completed, which makes the four main gas regions---Changqing, Qinghai, Talimu and south-west be connected, and begins to supply gas to Hunan and Hubei province and Sichuan and Chongqing region. So that an all-direction-extending natural gas pipeline has covered 18 provinces in our country.
As an important civil engineering, the second artery of west-east natural gas transmission project will benefit 400 million people after putting into operation, and makes the natural gas proportion increases 1-2% in our country’s primary energy resource consumption. Every year, 76.80 million tons of coal will be replaced, which reduces 130 million tons carbon dioxide discharge, 1.44 million tons sulfur dioxide, 0.66 million tons dust and 0.36 million tons nitrogen oxides.
According to the statistics, up to 13th June, the line has transmitted 10.6 billion cubic meters Central Asia natural gas, more than 0.1billion Chinese people have benefitted from it.
